Live art is the creation of a painting in real time during an event. It’s not a performance, but an act of worship — a way of encountering God’s presence as the artwork unfolds before your eyes. Sometimes the painting takes shape within an hour, and other times it may stretch across three to six hours, growing layer by layer alongside the rhythm of the gathering. As the colors build and the image emerges, people are invited into the process — not just watching art being made, but experiencing the Spirit of God move through it.
Renae has been painting live from 2018 – Present
Renae turned to painting after the loss of her oldest brother in 2006, creating pieces here and there and even holding one show in downtown Des Moines in 2012. But the art of that season carried a heavy darkness, reflecting the pain and alcoholism she was walking through. Years later, after finding freedom from addiction and coming to know Jesus again, everything changed. As she went deep into His Word and began serving in her church’s art ministry, her brush was reborn — not for performance, but for worship. Today, through live art, her canvases unfold in real time as a living testimony of God’s presence, inviting others to encounter Him in every stroke.

Transformation, What you see is what you get, Foundation built on prayer
My name is Jennifer Burger and I am the Creative Arts Director at Lutheran Church of Hope. Renae Zanella came to work at Lutheran Church of Hope in 2017. During that time I was transitioning to the Creative Arts Ministry from another ministry within the church. Renae would come down to clean the ministry offices and while she cleaned we would have conversations about God and her art. Her full story is inspiring and beautiful.

Always an Encourager, Unique Style, Fearlessly express it in her works
I met Renae a few years ago in an online creative arts class, through our church. We did a book and video study, then created art through the inspiration. We shared our creations online each week. We mostly did small pieces, usually painting. I could see Renae’s talent, but not until I saw her gallery display at church did I understand just how talented Renae is. We developed a friendship through church, we were in more classes together, did some volunteering together.
Painting was still pretty new to me. I had done a few pieces for the church gallery. Renae was always an encourager and had my back when I started painting live at holiday services. As I got to know her more, I came to understand her passion for art, the inspiration that continually comes to her for creating.
