“Mary”

I love this time of year with all the festive lights and trees decorated reminds me of that magical feeling I’d get as a child. It was tradition to drive around looking at lights after Christmas Eve service. There’s some kind of nostalgic feeling I get thinking about shimmering trees, special time with family and when I was young the possibility of all the gifts that could be under that Christmas tree in the morning. Sadly that was my excitement and then disappointment when I didn’t get what I wanted for Christmas growing up. My parents had us sit down, light advent candles and read the story of Jesus birth every year before we could open gifts. I didn’t understand then but now I see how awesome it was that my parents kept the true meaning at the heart of the holiday. They kept planting the seeds and watering them every year so one day it would all hopefully make sense.

So as I’ve grown up and have a deeper understanding of who Jesus is the presents and gifts have completely lost their importance. I’m seeking a way to be of service this time of year and show people the love of God by my actions. Notice on this artwork there are no gifts under the Christmas trees. The word BORN is under the trees to represent the best gift of Jesus.

I also love that trees represent interconnectedness. That all things are connected in this world. Trees all are connected in an underground network where they communicate to each other things they need or things they could share to help the other trees survive. That’s how God designed us to be in community and help each other out.

For the first layer I spray-painted the words Be still and know that I am God, Born, God is Love, the cross and fish symbol all over the background to represent the truth underneath all of the fancy festive decorations and gifts. God came down in human form to be with us and save us from sin and death. Jesus Christ birth is the gift that we are celebrating this time of year. His birth is way more significant than just a distant historical event. It’s something that happens within in our own reality over and over again day after day. Jesus being born marks the beginning of a personal relationship with God who is most certainly alive and moving.

“So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Each 12” x 12” piece is named after a woman from the Bible that I am being lead to learn more about. This Christmas I pray that we are called to dive deeper into the true meaning of this season. The celebration of renewed mind and rebirth. We can experience this gift of Gods presence everyday when we invite Him into our life. Following Jesus will transform our heart and minds if we open our hearts.
